Poliomyelitis or polio for short is a virus that causes a mild, flu-like illness in some people but in others it can develop to a deadly and a literally crippling disease that can lead to death if it is not prevented or not taken seriously. Polio had been nearly eliminated in the USA because of widespread immunization; however Polio stands as a problem for less fortunate countries. Polio is a disease that can damage the nervous system, cause paralysis, damage the brain, and deteriorate muscles causing them to become extremely weak. There are three different types of Polio, Non-paralytic polio, spinal paralytic, and Bulbar polio. During a polio attack nerve cells in the spinal cord are damaged or destroyed. These nerve cells transmit impulses to the muscles and allow them to move. Without these cells the body cannot move and is helpless. There are many signs and symptoms of the infection polio.
