European Imperialism in Film Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
The three films, Nanook of the North, The Drum, and Lawrence of Arabia, all contribute to Edward Said's argument that cultural products managed to justify, perpetuate, and explain imperialism all at the same time. They manage to complicate that argument on several levels as well. At first glance the films seem to support Said's argument to a T, however if one looks further into the films, it is apparent that their effect on his argument can work both ways.
In the film Nanook of the North, the argument of Said is emphasized over and over again. The sheer joy
Nanook and his family while at the trading post reaffirmed the belief that the Inuits were a primitive tribe who were amazed at modern technology. The Inuits were depicted as people who had no knowledge of modern technology. This perpetuates the view that they were a people inferior to the citizens of the U.S. while also justifying American superiority over the primitive tribes of the northern tundra.
