To what Extent was Stalin Responsible for the Purges between 1932 and 1939? Abstract The essay discusses Stalin’s responsibility of the purges between 1932 and 1939. The first part of the essay will briefly assess Lenin’s legacy on Stalin’s terror mechanism. This is followed by the genuine fear of a hidden conspiracy and how the volatile situation in 1932, strained international relations, economic situation and Stalin’s suspicious mind contributed to it. The importance of this fear was how it suggested that Stalin had no real plan for his later purges between 1932 and 1934. After the Kirov’s murder, Stalin seized this opportunity to legalise purges and organised trial against Zinoviev and Kamenev. The second part discusses fear of the top leadership and the critical reaction of the party members. There was a degree of autonomy and thus this suggested that Stalin did not control the whole situation.
