Evaluating the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The IMF was created as part of the Bretton Woods system and is an organization with over 150 member countries. Its duty is to stabilize the international monetary system and make loans to members when they experience severe current account deficits, subject to conditions of economic reforms. From the economic nationalist point of view, someone like Joseph Stiglitz would say that the IMF will hurt our country. The US is using this to exploit their own interests, like buying Korean airlines for the mere price of one plane at $165M. Local companies will simply get hurt when the borders are opened. Steve Appleton, CEO of Micron, was an economic nationalist as he didn�t think the US should use tax money to help Korea, when it would only hurt US businesses. An extreme liberal would not want any IMF intervention, and would simply let South Korea collapse. If they had their way, there would not be any IMF in existence.
