Emancipation Proclamation: Abraham Lincoln Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

I. INTRODUCTION Abraham Lincoln gave many great speeches throughout his life, and his presidential term. Out of all of these great speeches, there is one that stands out above the rest. That speech was the Emancipation Proclamation. Lincoln was against slavery one hundred percent. While others wanted slavery to be expanded throughout the Southern states, Lincoln disagreed. He emphasized how important it was to maintain and defend the Union throughout the war. He did not want slavery to be a reason for the Union to fall. The Emancipation Proclamation was a document that was written by Abraham Lincoln and issued on September 22, 1862. It became effective January 1, 1863. Lincoln decided to wait until the Union army won a battle before he issued the Emancipation Proclamation, because he feared that if he did not wait, it would look like an act of desperation. The victory finally came to the Union army at the battle of Antietam (Lincoln's Preliminary Emancipation Proclamation: About the Document 2006).
