Standing Strong: Indigenous Australians Struggle to Preserve their Culture Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The Indigenous people of Australia were united through their shared experiences of colonization and degradation. This unity instilled them with strength necessary to protest against their oppression. Through art, literature, music, and especially film, the Aboriginal Australians reaffirmed the importance of maintaining their culture. The first major challenge faced by Aboriginal society was the loss of land. The European idea of Terra Nullius (meaning “empty land”) led the colonists to believe that, because they did not see any sign that the Aboriginal people used the land (for agriculture or permanent housing), the Aboriginal inhabitants must not have owned any of the land. Thus, the colonists quickly laid claim to this unsettled territory and took from the Indigenous people the foundation of their dreaming. Another significant challenge experienced by Aboriginals was the Europeans representations of them. They were seen as savages and theorized to be less evolved than the European settlers due to their disregard for material possessions, their hunter-gatherer lifestyle, and ......
