In The Crucible, Miller shows that in the 17th century puritanical and theocratic society, mere 'dancing in the woods', by few young girls, had the power to cause paranoia, mass hysteria and moral degradation, and ultimately lead to the death of many innocent people in Salem, Massachusetts. In order to define the society and the significance of dancing in the woods, it is necessary to look at the social and historical context of the play - The Crucible, an allegorical tale, is based on the Salem Witch Trials of 1692 and, the McCarthy investigations of the 1950s. During the 17th Century, the Puritans, who inhabited Salem, lived in an extremely strict theocracy. They believed that their way of life was right, and all other ways were wrong; and that their religion was the only religion of which God approved. The concept of a private life was considered heretical. Games and toys were restricted because they were considered as signs of idolism. Although Puritans had left England to avoid religious persecution, they established a theocratic society in America based on religious intoler......
