Agoge Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Agoge is a Greek training of boys to become Spartans and fight in wars. When boys are born in Sparta they are examined to see if they are to be strong and healthy. The baby boys are brought up to fight and kill. While training the boys were sent out into the wilderness to fight for themselves for a year’s time. During Leonites` time in the wilderness he had to fight off a starving mean wolf to survive. The boys are put through training that teaches them how to hold their shield high and have fine thrust with their spears. This is the Agoge and part of what it’s about. When a boy was born to Spartan parents the mother would encourage the baby to cry loudly in an effort to prove that it had strong lungs. The mother would also wash it with wine, in order to give it a strong colour and complexion. The Dad would then take the child to a council of elders. The veterans would look the naked baby over to check for any birth defects or the slightest sign of weakness or sickness. If the baby had any birth defect or seem to be weak, they judged the baby to be unworthy of carrying a Spart......
