An Ethical Dilemma Introduction Many times in business situations, there arise ethical problems that can cause an employer or manager to evaluate the situation and decide if it needs to be reported. Ethical problems can include human resources issues such as discrimination and harassment. They can also include such dilemmas as conflicts of interest, customer confidence issues, and use of corporate resources. Identifying Ethical Problems When an employee is treated unfairly for something besides their job qualifications, it is called discrimination. Discrimination can stem from racial, ethnic, religious, or sexual stereotypes. When an employee is made uncomfortable by unsolicited sexual behavior by a co-worker or manager, it is called sexual harassment. Harassment is a form of discrimination that focuses away from a person’s job performance and toward unfair treatment and abuse of power.
