Traditionally, the term tragic hero is linked to the idea of nobility (Glicksberg 65; Farnham 3-4). The hero is often of noble birth or holding a high position in society, one who is greatly admired by many. The hero, however, has a fatal imperfection, a specific flaw or weakness which, at some point, may lead to the heros downfall (Farnham 3-4). Shakespeares Antony is a tragic hero because he has two main flaws, his position in Roman society and his fatal weakness, the Egyptian Queen Cleopatra. Antonys struggle as a general and a lover is continuous throughout the play. He is a great general, one of the three left in power to preside over the Roman Empire following the death of Julius Caesar. He is devoted to his duty and enjoys the esteem of his men, even his rival Caesar. However, it is clear that he is in love with Cleopatra and throughout the play it shows that he cares more for her than his reputation which makes him a tragic hero.
