To Kill A Mockingbird - characterization essay Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

To Kill a Mockingbird was written by Harper Lee in 1962, set in the 1930’s, outlining the seriousness of prejudice. Tom Robinson and Boo Radley are minor characters who are not explored in great depth. However, Harper Lee has used specific characterization techniques, such as language, which has resulted in creating these ‘Mockingbirds’ as key elements in developing the overall themes and symbols of the novel. The title of To Kill a Mockingbird has very little literal connection to the plot, but it carries a great deal of symbolic weight in the book. In this story of innocents destroyed by evil, the “mockingbird” comes to represent the idea of innocence. Thus, to kill a mockingbird is to destroy innocence. Throughout the book, a number of characters, particularly Tom Robinson and Boo Radley, are identified as mockingbirds—innocents who have been injured or destroyed through contact with evil.
