While reading Spruill’s Women’s Life and Work in the Southern Colonies, I found myself back in time. I was in a time before there were cars, cell phones, and computers. It was a time before women like Condoleezza Rice, Hillary Clinton, and Sarah Palin could rise to such powerful positions in a nation’s government. This was a time when the traditional role of most women was to be keeper of the home, a role that along with others would help shape the social history of our country. Spruill’s purpose for writing this book “was to find out as much as possible about the everyday life of women in the English colonies of the South”.(preface) She quotes many records, letters, newspaper articles, and advertisements, which give the colonists an avenue to speak for themselves. Spruill covers all phases of a southern colonial woman’s life, such as: “her function in the settlement of colonies, her home and domestic occupations, her social life and recreation, aims and methods of her education, her part in affairs outside the home, and the manner in which she was regarded by the law ......
