Can Willy Loman obtain the American Dream in the absence of honesty, sex, and performance? Willy characterizes the American Dream as being wealthy and having a successful career. The American Dream is what Death of a Salesman is all about. Willy Loman kills himself because he has lost the belief that he can still, at the age of sixty-three, attain the American Dream; he can only achieve a part of it by leaving behind his life insurance money. Personal wealth in today’s society is based on materialistic ideals, and money. Willy died trying to become wealthy, but who defines wealth? To some, wealth means having more money than could be spent in a lifetime. Often their material belongings, like the kind of car they drive or the size of their television, define a person’s wealth and social standing. This is true of the way Willy Loman defined wealth. Willy needed to have all the new gadgets that were on the market. By doing so, he believed everyone would think that he was wealthy.
