Cold Mountain - Contrast, Correlation, and Perception: What Initiated Inmans Journey Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

For Inman, Cold Mountain represented all that was sacred to him; his home, his family, and his beloved Ada. It is Cold Mountain that Inman believed would help him heal physically, but especially mentally, from his time at war. Inman’s portion of the story revolves around his physical journey to his home in Cold Mountain. It was a memory of his childhood that pushed Inman to return there: the memory of him sitting in school when he whipped his hat out the window, then crossed the playground towards Cold Mountain, never to come back. Symbols within Inman’s memory subconsciously correlated and contrasted with both his current condition as a wounded soldier, and the overall goal of his journey homeward. His mind contrasted the confinement of school and military with the freedom of Cold Mountain. He subconsciously correlated the crossing of the school yard and traversing the cornfields to his eventual success on his journey.
