Effects of Essential Oils against the Bacterial Growth of Escherichia Coli Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Abstract Essential oils are known to have antimicrobial activity against a wide spectrum of bacteria. The main objective of this study was to evaluate possible zone of inhibitions by the use of essential oils against the bacterial growth of Escherichia coli. Antimicrobial activity of selected plant extracts against E. coli was dose dependent (Hammer, Carson, and Riley 1999). Doses of essential oils with the ability to completely inhibit bacterial growth were measured in millimeters by the diameter of each zone of inhibition. The six essential oils used and labeled on the agar are mineral oil, spanish oregano, black pepper, sweet basil, tea tree oil, and lemon oil. Essential oils are concentrated aromatic chemical extracted from plants. These oils are responsible for the flavor and fragrance of plants. Essential oils are one potential natural alternative to disinfectants and antiseptics that inhibits bacterial growth and control pathogenic bacteria.
