Introduction
According to our textbook, there are three theories that apply to the expectations or purposes in education (Webb, Metha, & Jordan, 2007). The three perspectives are functionalist, conflict, and interactionist. These theories are important to understand when developing an individual�s own perspective on education. The perspectives need to be studied and understood to better understand where an individual stands on education.
Functional Perspective
The functional thinker believes the purpose of education is to create productive citizens. The school and the curriculum to a functionalist are to �preserve a common set of values that foster social unity and maintain social order� (Webb, Metha, & Jordan, 2007, p. 197). This expectation of students also carries over globally, and there is an importance given to how American students stand against other students in other countries (2007).
