McCabes arguments
McCabe sets out as a lawyer would, to defend his client, God, on the charge that he is responsible for evil: wreaking all kinds of murder and mayhem, of running a world full of misery and malice (and) crimes
He states :
The world is full of suffering and sin;
God committed the world, openly admits to that, and so no one else is to blame;
He is not going to say God is innocent because he is not omnipotent;
He accepts the evidence: Evil is real;
He will not argue that at least some of the evil in world is not caused by God but by the free actions of people.. (and that) God
.can hardly be held responsible for what men do freely, and a great deal of the awfulness of the world is due to the viciousness of men and women.
His defence will be to argue 1. everything good is brought about by God; 2. evil suffered is a necessary concomitant of certain kinds of good; and 3. evil done is not brought about by God at all.
McCabe talks then about badness and how badness isnt something God created, like milk or gum, but it is a character......
