Violence against women is becoming pervasive in American society. Every year an estimated 8.7 million women are abused by their partners (Roberts, 2002). Womens battering has reached epidemic proportions in the United States and is considered to be a major social problem. Domestic violence is beginning to be one of the leading causes of injury and death to American women (Roberts, 2002). While many people think that only disadvantaged and lower-class women are victims of domestic violence, which is far from the truth. Working class and professional women are victims of domestic violence, too. According to the Commonwealth Fund in 1998 Survey of Womens Health, nearly two in five women had at some point in their life been physically and/or sexually assaulted or abused or had been a victim of domestic violence in their lifetime. The survey also stated that one in five women also reported that she had been raped or assaulted in her lifetime (Collins, Duchon, Joseph, Schoen, Simantov & Yellowitz, 1998, p. 8).
