Civil Wars Empowerment of Women Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

During the course of the United States Civil War, women of the slaveholding class of the South were forced to undergo a great deal of unforeseen changes in the way they conducted their everyday lives. This class of women was unable to ignore the events that were taking place around them and was compelled to make amendments to how they lived, how they acted, and most importantly, how they thought. Once the military hostilities ultimately reached an end, the men of the time did not return home to the same women that they had left, but instead came face to face with a new form of irrevocably empowered womanhood. Not only had this elite class of women deeply altered the way in which they perceived themselves, but society had also gradually begun to recognize these changes and in some cases even accept them. In the antebellum period of the South, the role of a slave-owning woman, with respect to politics and perceived intelligence, was profoundly different than at the time of the warÂ’s near ending.
