CHAOS, ORDER, AND THE PROBLEM OF FATE: a brief study of THE WINTERS TALE Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

When looking at a text it is always useful to examine the macro-structural aspects so as to establish a workable framework from which to read further into the meso- and micro-structures. Study of the macro-structural features of a text gives the reader possible explanations for the events occurring in the text, as a greater understanding of the author's paradigm and overall plot and character direction is made possible. The genre of The Winter's Tale is what has been called 'tragicomedy', which can be loosely defined as “plays which contain tragic situations and happy endings” (Muir 11); bearing this definition in mind, it becomes clear that a tragicomedy (at least the type written by Shakespeare) is a genre concerned with a play's plot structure rather than it's tone or mood (Worthen 341). It can be argued that The Winter's Tale was written within the fairly broad framework of Control versus Fate, i.e. man's own wishes and interventions weighed up against the pre-Christian concept of the all-powerful Fate, whom (according to Greco-Roman mythology) even Jove (Zeus/Jupiter) w......
