Three Areas of Thomas Merton
Thomas Merton was a man who had bee converted from a dramatic life of artistic self-indulgence to an equally dramatic life of monastic silence and penance. Entering the Trappist Monastery he expected it to be a great world of silence. He found himself first writing books designed to explain the monastic life and contemplation. Then in later years he found himself venturing into social questions such as Civil Rights issues. In his last years his growing interest in Eastern especially Buddhist traditions of meditation and spirituality, which would significantly influence his thinking and writing. This essay is designed to touch on 3 areas of Mertons life that he wrote extensively about which are Contemplation, Civil Rights Issues (and peace from no war) and Eastern traditions.
