Are the Gifts of the Spirit for Today?
Any time the topic of Spiritual Gifts is addressed, by a group of Christians coming from various denominational backgrounds, the discussion is generally guaranteed to be affected by preconceptions, fears, and biases. My own spiritual background demonstrates this point. It started in an anti-Pentecostal EUB church in which anything that even looked Pentecostal was labeled demon possession. After this I spent six years in a Foursquare church, which appeared very similar to the current Third Wave style of churches. For the last 24 years I have been involved in a church that has its root in classic Pentecostalism. Each setting had a different approach to the realm of Spiritual Gifts and each one had a scriptural base for their opinions. From each different setting I learned things, positively and negatively. This paper is an expression of what Ive come to believe.
I believe that the gifts of the Holy Spirit, mentioned in the Scriptures, are meant to be active in the Church today. How these gifts function......
