Monologue The poem ‘monologue’ is solely written to highlight the feelings and fears of a person belonging to a working class. Hone Tuwhare interacts with his readers and audience by providing an insight upon the dilemmatic life of the labors by putting himself in their shoes and reflecting upon their consistent insecurities that they undergo on daily basis. ‘I like working near a door’, this first phrase of the poem delineates sarcasm coupled with humor. The worker is contented with working close to a door with his ‘locker handy’ close by due to the fact that he can escape easily and it gives a sense of security to him. His tools and skills are a source of power and conform for him, with it he is command and hope is not lost for him incase he loses his job for the skills would remain with him forever. The poet further analysis the advantages and disadvantages of being near the ‘big doors’. For one, he has to put up with the harsh environment around him throughout the year.
