Socialization is a lifelong process, influenced by both environment and heredity, through which people learn the attitudes, values, and actions appropriate for members of a particular culture (Schaefer, 68). There are two types of culture, material culture and non-material culture. Material culture refers to physical aspects such as food, and houses and non-material cultures refers to customs, beliefs, philosophies, governments, and patterns of communication as well as ways of using material objects (Schaefer, 68). Infants are born without culture. They must be transformed by their parents or caregivers, teachers, and others into cultural beings (Schissler, Chap.2). Culture defines our self-identity, a distinct identity that sets one apart from another. We all have different feelings and beliefs about who we are and what we like. We develop these feelings and beliefs through culture and what we are taught through the agents of socializations.
