Arbitron Beginning in 1949, Jim Seiler launched a business, collecting television broadcast ratings. It began with the company name of American Research Bureau, changing its name to the now, well-known Arbitron in the 1960s. Arbitron has gone on to be the most successful company in its field of radio audience research, collecting listener data on radio audiences (Arbitron). Arbitron has several methods by which they obtain the data needed to develop their ratings. One method is that of distributing diaries to a select population. However, the method that is grabbing the most attention is Arbitrons Portable People Meter (Eastman 51). Arbitron collects its data on radio audiences by using paper diaries and the internet for those who prefer responding online (Eastman 51). These diaries are mailed to a random sampling of houses in each of the two hundred and ninety nine markets in the United States. Anyone over the age of twelve may participate and fill out their own diaries, recording what they listen to on the radio and which radio stations they tune into most frequently......
