B.F. Skinner, one of the world’s most influential psychologists, has been credited with the theory of operant conditioning. Operant conditioning is the idea that behavior is determined by its consequences, either reinforcements or punishments, which make it more or less likely that the behavior will occur again. This theory is evident in the prophetic novel 1984, especially in the consequence of punishment, as the Party brainwashes Winston into turning from his rebellious ways, following and, in the end, truly loving Big Brother. Before examining the presence of operant conditioning in the novel, it is important to understand the basis of the theory itself. The two types of consequences that operant conditioning tests are reinforcement and punishment. Reinforcement is a consequence that causes a behavior to occur with greater frequency, while punishment is a consequence that causes a behavior to occur with less frequency.
