Ontological Structure of Familiar Particulars Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

There are two major competing accounts of the ontological structure of familiar particulars: the bundle theory and the substratum theory. Both bundle theorists and substratum theorists believe that ordinary objects are metaphysically constructed as fundamental basic entities, but they disagree about what those basic entities are. While bundle theorists agree that the basic entity is some form of an attribute, the substratum theorists, who will not be discussed in further detail, insist on using bare substrata to account for the agreement. Philosophers are concerned with the relationship between a concrete particular and the attributes associated with that particular. Within the bundle theory, there are two possible approaches. One approach would be to construe attributes as universals, and the other, less common approach, theorizes substances or particulars to be a bundle of tropes.
