The Starbucks coffee experience has probably not lived up to its expectations as far as the average coffee consumer is concerned. When Starbucks first began offering customers individual cups of coffee inside their stores, Howard Shultz wanted to provide an Italian style café feel while customers enjoyed specialty coffee freshly ground and brewed right before their eyes. This idea brought to the United States and later to many foreign countries, is what enabled Starbucks to gain a massive following and maintain an aggressive growth strategy throughout the 1990’s and early 2000’s. Howard Shultz envisioned this growth strategy as having Starbucks stores “blanket” an entire demographic area and basically placing Starbucks stores within city blocks of each other. However, as the current economic downturn engulfed the United States and organizations like McDonald’s and Dunkin’ Donuts have entered the market with a cheaper cup of coffee, Starbucks sales began to decrease and certain stores suffered losses that were too much to take.
