The poem To An Athlete Dying Young by A.E. Housman is one pertaining to the rise of a young athlete at the peak of his physical glory and the immediate collapse as he dies towards the end of the poem. The dying of a young individual is thought of to be one of the most saddening circumstances. A life wasted is inconceivable in the minds of many, although, it is suggested in this poem that one’s life be better off wasted at one’s peak rather then during their demise, such that there accomplishments will not have faded in the eyes of others. This is the main theme exhibited throughout the poem. Housman had written, “Now you will not swell the rout Of lads that wore their honours out, Runners whom renown outran And the name died before the man”, meaning that the athlete depicted in this poem had been the fortunate one in the sense that he will be remembered at his more prevalent part of his life. Emotionally, this poem reflects an attitude of disregard towards the death of a young person, but more so the luck he had in a way that he was able to leave a legacy behind while he stil......
