One of the most acrimonious issues in Canadian history is the disturbing period of the residential schooling system. In the beginning, “both the federal government and the Treaty 8 leaders of First Nations wanted to provide schooling to educate aboriginal children, though for different reasons. Aboriginal chiefs hoped Euro-Canadian education would assist their young to learn the skills of the newcomer’s society and help them make a successful transition to a world dominated by the strangers. The government perceived schooling as a means of making First Nations economically self-sufficient, with its primary objective being to reduce aboriginal dependency. The government collaborated with Christian missionaries to encourage native self-sufficiency and religious conversion through the native education policy”, which resulted in the formation of residential schools.
