Burma: A Country in Search of Change Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Tucked between Thailand and Bangladesh in Southeast Asia and bordered by the Andaman Sea and Bay of Bengal is a country the size of Texas called Burma. Ruled by a military junta, Burma is a resource-rich country, suffers from pervasive government controls, inefficient economic policies, and rural poverty. Burma gained its independence from the United Kingdom on January 4th, 1948. Burma is a source country for men, women, and children trafficked to East and Southeast Asia for sexual exploitation, domestic service, and forced commercial labor. Burma is a country of transit and destination for women trafficked from China for sexual exploitation. The military junta's economic mismanagement, human rights abuses, and policy of using forced labor are driving factors behind Burma's large trafficking problem. Burma remains the world's second largest producer of illicit opium with an estimated production in 2005 of 380 metric tons (CIA, 2007). Once again the government’s lack of care or even lack of commitment to stop this drug production is why it still goes on. The junta came into authority......
