What do we do to obtain oil to meet the needs of Americans without having to sell out to Middle Eastern countries, not only with money but with foreign policy? Last month, President made a major move in this direction by lifting the eighteen year old White House ban on offshore drilling. He is now actively working to convince a mostly environmentally friendly Democratic Congress to take the next step by lifting the congressional moratorium on oil drilling. As President Bush stated, The only thing that is keeping us from drilling offshore is Congress. For many years, Congress has listened to the cries of environmentalists that claim the following: 1) Offshore oil drilling would do irreparable damage to the ecosystem; 2) the potential for oil spills is too great; and 3) Offshore drilling wouldnt have that great of an effect on the availability and price of fuel. The current congressional energy policy is best described by one newspaper columnist when he writes, America says to foreign producers: We prefer not to pump our oil, so please pump more of yours, thereby lower......
