Abstract
The Olympic Games started with strictly male competitors, and evolved into an integrated ceremony to celebrate the efforts of both male and female athletic champions. With the inclusion of female athletes, efforts were made to create a level playing field and to reveal male imposters that would gain fame by competing as a female with the advantages that are inherent with the male biology. The International Olympic Committee has both set and revoked regulations on female and male competitors and has recently had the challenge of including transsexual athletes in a traditionally male and female competition.
When the Olympic Games began, the competitions were limited to solely men, even women spectators were strictly barred from the games. There were no uniforms, and the men traditionally competed in the nude. When the Olympic Games were revived in 1869, the founder, Baron Pierre De Coubertin, was opposed to any women competing, reflecting the traditional cultural view of women being the weaker sex.
