People have been keeping track of their money and recording details of transactions for thousands of years. Not until the 15th century, however, did accounting gain structure that is similar to what is in wide use today. Fra Luca Pacioli wrote books about a number of subjects, but one in particular, called the Summa defined the parameters of double-entry accounting (deSantis). Pacioli is called The Father of Accounting for his publication, but merchants in Venice had been using the double entry system for some time (deSantis). Think about what was happening in the world around the end of the 15th century: among other things Christopher Columbus was discovering a new world, and trade between nations and states was growing exponentially. As the world was becoming smaller through trade and expedition, double entry accounting was finding a home everywhere in the world as the merits of maintaining balanced books struck a chord with money handlers everywhere.
