The Awakening: Symbolism of the Sea Throughout the novel, The Awakening, by Kate Chopin, the sea serves as a significant component of Edna Pontellier's individual awakening. The sea is a physical representation of freedom and individuality that Edna is missing in her life and functions as temptation that she inevitably succumbs. Chopin utilizes the symbolism of the sea as a functional representation of release from oppression and the discovery of individuality to further accentuate the result of inescapable solitude from obtaining independence. Edna finds that the presence of the sea begins to reveal her identity and also her dejection towards her motherly responsibilities. "Her glance wandered...whose sonorous murmur reached her like a loving but imperative entreaty" (Chopin 24). The sonorous murmur expresses a unclear message from the sea, alarming her of something to come. This moment exemplifies the power of the sea and its seductive manner of entreating Edna's body.
