In March 1095, envoys from the Byzantine emperor Alexius II addressed Pope Urban II at a church council at Piacenza, describing Constantinoples urgent need for soldiers to supplement his existing mercenaries and home guard in the fight against the Turks. The envoys words are not recorded, but it is clear that they wanted the pope to recruit European soldiers to serve in Alexiuss army. (O.J. Thatcher and E.H. A few months later, in November, the crusading movement was launched at the close of a general church council at Clermont in France, when Urban delivered a sermon which responded to Alexiuss plea by calling upon European Christians to rescue the Holy Land from Muslim occupation.
