Sir Gawain and The Green Knight Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

British Literature I In the Middle Ages a knight was expected not only to be a bold warrior in battle, exhibiting strength and skill, but to match his warrior strength with a virtuous heart that exuded a host of chivalric values. Although never put into a strict publicized list, these chivalric values have come to be known as the Chivalric Code, a term that came about in France in the late 10th century. A classic example of knightly virtue and upholding a knight’s Chivalric Code is Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, where Gawain, despite his attempts at personal perfection of chivalry, exhibits courage, loyalty, and courtesy. Gawain emerges early in the text as a knight who truly honors his knightly code and understands his knightly duties. Gawain proves his loyalty and courage right after we are introduced to him as he accepts the challenge of the Green Knight in King Arthur’s castle.
