Hitler’s Thousand Year Reich lasted a mere twelve years and four months. This perhaps more than anything else, seems to suggest that despite the propaganda of an all-powerful Fuhrer, Hitler’s grip on power was weaker than appeared. The question of how far Hitler was a true dictator – in terms of being a leader with total control over both party and state – has been the subject of enduring debate among historians and two views have emerged. Ian Kershaw’s view that Hitler was ‘a willing prisoner of forces…an instrument rather than the creator [of events]’ , illustrates the Structuralist view, concentrating on Hitler’s disregard for Nazi Economic policy and his chaotic governmental system, to argue that Hitler was a weak ruler with no control over his own Reich. Norman Rich, however, challenges him with the Intentionalist view that ‘Hitler was master in the Third Reich’ claiming that these apparent weaknesses in the regime - such as Hitler’s inability to make decisions - may in fact be considered as evidence of Hitler’s power and strength.
