Theme of the Yellow Wallpaper Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Theme of The Yellow Wallpaper Themes are important parts of stories. Some themes express oppression, as in the story of The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. This story was written in 1892, when the women’s rights era was almost in full swing. The husband, John, was a quite controlling character, keeping her inside of a summer house throughout the story. Her physician thought that the best medicine for her “slight hysterical tendency” was complete rest, and not to write at all during her healing period. Being a physician himself, her brother agreed, and there she sat in a house with no one to converse with, apart from the horrid wallpaper that her room bore. The main character in this story is oppressed in two very different ways. First, and foremost, she is facing oppression by being trapped in a room in which the bed is described as a “great immovable bed,” and in which windows with bars run crosswise, not permitting entrance or exit. The wallpaper in the room is different hues of yellow and orange, with patterns that “commit every artistic sin”......
