Revenge in Titus Andronicus Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The characters in Titus Andronicus are driven mainly by revenge, fueling the rape and carnage that occur throughout the play. Characters like Tamora are driven purely by revenge, however some escape this labeling such as Titus himself, who also allows honor to be a guiding force in the action he takes over the course of the play. Titus even goes as far as to commit acts like killing his son in the name of his and SaturninusÂ’ honor. As a final act of honor while having Tamora and Saturninus over for dinner, Titus questions whether the mythological character Virginius was right in killing his daughter, after she had been raped. After the emperor answered yes Titus stabbed Lavinia, giving back what honor had been taken from her, then went on to explain that Chiron and Demetrius had raped her. Even though the relationship between Tamora and Titus provides the main revenge plot in this tragedy, there is also a definite contrast between the themes of honor and revenge.
