American National Consciousness Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

After the American Revolution, an immense sense of national consciousness emerged. Americans, mainly politicians, believed that for their country to be independent, a language peculiar to the inhabitants of the newly-born nation must exist. Changes in the English vocabulary were stimulated by certain influential American politiciansÂ’ nationalistic voices, calling for uniqueness, and by WebsterÂ’s significant legacy. Patriotic American voices strived for making their language a distinct one, either by setting new linguistic changes or congressional proposals. Famed for his papers on the English language in the Pennsylvania Journal, John Witherspoon calls for the consideration of a standard which would be recognized in America. Witherspoon strongly disapproves the imitation of Great Britain both in its way of speaking and of rejecting old pronunciations. John Adams, the second president of the United States, claimed that the congress should set up an academy, as did France, Spain and Italy, to publish observations on the language.
