Through the novel “Old Man and the Sea” Ernest Hemingway relates the old man Santiago as a Christ-like figure. Hemingway does this by using the significance of events and through symbolism. Ernest Hemingway’s “Old Man and the Sea” depicts the classic Christ’s figure in Santiago through his use of symbolism and Biblical allusion. Looking through the characters in the book and their personalities easily can be seen their connections with the major figures in the New Testament. The old man, Santiago never showed himself defeat, he is never angry and always look on the brighter side on the things, just like Jesus Christ did. He doesn’t seem to have luck when it comes to fishing and he is struggling in order to catch a fish. One day, when he is out at the sea, he hooked a great marlin and then realizes he would not be able to kill the fish quickly. “Now we are joined together and have been since noon. Now no one to help either one of us” (Hemingway 50). He knows that it would not be easy to kill that gigantic fish, but he didn’t give up, he is going to the end till t......
