Different Breeds of Sheep Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The California Red, which can be bred year-round, was first developed in the 1970’s from crossbreeding Barbados and Tunis sheep. The name derives from the solid rust or cinnamon red color of the lambs which turn to beige starting at 12 months. This breed belongs to the medium-size category with mature rams weighing 225 - 250 lbs and ewes between 130 - 150 lbs (CAREDSheep.com). Both sexes are innately without horns and their faces have hair instead of wool. Their medium wool is silky and is popularly used in weaving and hand spinning while their meat, known for its tenderness and flavor is also utilized (Ferraro). Reds are resilient against various conditions related to climate, health or handling and can achieve ideal weight without a heavy grain diet. Another is breed is the Dorper, which compose one of the largest breeds in South Africa and was popularized in the U.S. in 1995, is the product of the Black headed Persian ewe-Dorset Horn cross in the 1930’s (OSU).
