The first successful artificial insemination (AI) was performed in 1784 by Spallanzani. He performed the procedure on a dog. Sixty-two days later the dog gave birth to three pups. But, the history of AI goes back to 1678. A man named Leeuwenhoek and his assistant were the first people to inspect sperm under lenses. Leeuwenhoek had ground a lens with 270 magnifications. He called the sperm “animalcules”. In 1897 several countries reported that AI had been successful in several countries. The cases had involved rabbits, dogs, and horses. In Russia (1899) Ivanow began to establish AI as a practical procedure. His research was published in July 1922 in the Journal of Agricultural Science. Ivanow also developed semen extenders and began training people to select superior animals. In 1938 the AI work in Russia was taken over by Milovanov . Most of the items used in AI today were invented by Milovanov. Danish veterinarians developed the method of rectovaginal fixation of the cervix.
