Great Gatsby Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Jay Gatsby is the protagonist and source of much criticism and adoration throughout the novel “the Great Gatsby,” by F. Scott Fitzgerald. As the title foretells the entire novel’s excitement envelops around Gatsby’s supposed “greatness.” His character is portrayed in many lights. At first, Gatsby is merely seen as a young, wealthy, mysterious man. Little information is told about who he is, except from various stories, of which everyone has their own version. Jay Gatsby is a self-made success. He has achieved the American dream and therefore others envy his proclaimed status. He throws lavish parties each weekend, lives in a gaudy mansion, and is surrounded by riches. His reputation and fortune precede him. His high social status and relentless wealth attribute to his astounding appeal. The American dream of the 1920’s is based on people’s status financially and socially. Jay Gatsby creates a man whom attains both. However, the flaws of such a shallow dream are exposed through out Gatsby’s career. His wealth can not substitute for his lack of real substance ......
