Elizabeth Bowen: The Demon Lover Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In this essay, I shall examine how Elizabeth Bowen takes the reader on a psychological journey through modern fiction. ‘The Demon Lover’ is a short story portraying the mental effect of the world war through a characters memory. Also comparing and contrasting, Bernard Malamud`s religious and increasingly mysterious fabulation, ‘The Magic Barrel’ which is an allegorical and dark mode of fiction, in the search of finding love. Both narratives take the reader beyond the ordinary boundaries of fiction, into a deeper, darker side, of the mind. Elizabeth Bowen, use of supernatural language and mysterious tone, immediately begins to create a sense of apprehension in the first paragraph of ‘The Demon Lover,’ which is set in the blitz. We are introduced to Mrs. Drover, who is at her London house, which has been abandoned during the bombing of World War II. ‘In her once familiar street…an unfamiliar queerness had silted up; a cat wove itself in and out of railings, but no human eye watched Mrs. Drover's return’.
