In this essay, I shall examine how the context of any given communication event allows us to predict communicative behaviour. I will analyze how George Orwell exploits this linguistic law in Nineteen Eighty-Four, to create a new type of political system, based upon utter obedience to the ruling powers.
Orwell created a book that reflected immensely against his society at the time of the writing. This saw the rising of totalitarianism, thus creating his main character Winston Smith, to explore the inhuman reality of a life totally under government control. Orwell portrays Winston as normal in his theory about life, and love to the reader, but when place in Nineteen Eighty-Fours context he becomes abnormal in a controlled manner. Orwell creates a world where the party attempts to control everything, including individuality, thoughts, and emotions. He takes the reader on a journey through Winstons love and cruelty, sympathizing with him makes the reader realize the real cost of the political system.
