Bad decisions, good decisions, smart steps, and missteps are all part of doing business. A company’s success depends on the organizational behavior that is exhibited by such decisions and moves. A study of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., one of the most successful companies in the world, reveals how a business can continue to be successful as long as the good and bad are balanced and handled properly. Sam Walton started the Wal-Mart legacy when he opened a discount store in Rogers, Arkansas, in 1962. On October 31, 1969, Wal-Mart officially became a corporation, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. By 1990, Wal-Mart was the top retailer and in 1991, the company went international with the opening of a store in Mexico City. In 2006, Wal-Mart’s $4 generic prescription drug program was unveiled. (History Timeline, 2008) This is just a brief history of the company that Sam built. Today, Wal-Mart in the United States includes supercenters, discount stores, Neighborhood Markets, and Sam’s Club membership warehouse clubs.
