Uncle Toms Children was unlike previous Black literature in many ways. It was a revolution in black awareness, and a new attitude towards racism. Previous literature by Negros painted an image of blacks in the south as submissive helpers to the whites. Yet this image which is epitomised by the figure of Uncle Remus and his Brer Rabbit stories, suggests that blacks were uneducated, ignorant and dependant on the white man. The name Uncle Toms Children is derived from a novel called Uncle Toms Cabin. In this novel, Uncle Tom was like a father /uncle figure to white children-an image many blacks wanted to shed. He was a loyal servant, and humble towards the whites. In this essay I will discuss how Wright disregards this image and creates a new character for blacks to look up to; a hero. Previous black literature conformed to what whites wanted. There were no triumphs, no rebellions and no confrontations.
