Catcher in the Rye Essay Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

All over the world since human beings began to learn to read and write, fitting in with your peers has been a continuing issue. Many instances in literature authors use the main character to send a message to the reader. Case in point, in The Catcher in the Rye, the main character Holden Caulfield struggles with the blatant fact that he is afraid of growing up. This picaresque novel sends the reader through three days of Holden’s life from leaving prep school to wandering the streets of New York City. J.D. Salinger suggests that Holden is afraid of growing up because his younger brother Allie died of leukemia and all his memories of him are from their childhood. Also, he uses drugs and alcohol to hide the truth about getting older but really Holden is immature even though he believes he is mature. Critics, in addition, may think that Holden is afraid of growing up because he constantly is failing out of prep school and deems that he is not going anywhere is life and especially the fact that the only person Holden can talk to is his ten year old sister, Phoebe.
